There is so much bunkum out there in the dojos when it comes to strength training. Happily, the place I train at has a good plyometric program, and there isn't too much time spent on static stretching or the silly leg-flailing "200 round kicks - go!" stuff.

Default Aikido and Strength

This article confirmed some of my experience in Aikido. I have found that strength does improve performance for me. Two mistakes jumped out for me:1. Insufficient intensity: When we warm up is alot of wrist and hip warm ups. When we are finished I don't have a sense of wired up to go. The intensity we begin with is slow which doesn't match the next moment of being thrown 4 times getting up and then throwing your partner. One partner in the dojo was a former boxer now he's intense.
2. We don't train aerobically and I understand and have experienced the need of anaerobic. After watching one of the higher ranks exam I knew I needed to have the anaerobic training.

I acknowledge in Aikido it's about getting one off balance and doing the technique. As a female about 5ft3in. I will not be able to perform on strength alone when partnered with a male over 6ft. My strength training shows up in my Aikido.
